Basic Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of those things that people kind of forget about when making breakfast, but my kids and I love it! It is easy to get on the table, it fills everyone up, and you can customize it. My kids are partial to Dinosaur Oatmeal out of a package, which is not the best or worst, but they have learned to make it on their own. Teaching kiddos to make their own breakfast is such a game changer, you have a little more time to make your coffee, pack lunches, sign all the sheets, and have a minute or two to yourself. This oatmeal is what I make while all the chaos is happening because it is so easy. It is packed with protein, fiber, and carbs to fuel your day. I love that I can adapt the toppings to what I have at the house but the base is so good and simple on it’s own too. This recipe is for one warming bowl but it is super easy to multiply for more servings. What do you like to top your bowl with?

Basic Oatmeal

  • 1 cup almond milk or milk of choice

  • 2 Tablespoons chia seeds

  • 1 Tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • pinch of salt

  • 1/2 cup + 2 Tablespoons old fashioned oats

  • serve with nuts and fruits

- In a small pan, combine the milk, chia, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt and bring to a boil.

- Stir in the oats, lower the heat, and cover the pan. Let cook about 5 minutes, stir and continue to cook until all the liquid has been absorbed.

- Serve with sliced bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or whatever fruit you love and some nuts or seeds you like for some crunch.

Use a measuring cup for the liquids and chia, the chia will thicken and add protein to your oatmeal. This recipe is for one glorious bowl, so if you need more, just double, triple, whatever!

Pour it all into a small pan and get it boiling!

Sprinkle in the oats and stir it all together. Lower the heat and cover it.
