Philly Cheesesteak Tacos

Philly Cheesesteak Tacos

I have always loved Philly Cheesesteaks, I went to Philadelphia when I was a kid a few times and had the real deal. Obviously, tacos are king here in Texas, so what better way to get my cheesesteak than to pop it into a tortilla?! They are epic, lemme tell you, we had friends over for football watching and games and they were devoured. Even my kids went bananas for them. You need these to be gluten free? Just use a GF tortilla! Those carb watchers can eat them in lettuce cups, on a low-carb tortilla, or just in a bowl! Whatever way you make them, you will love it. You should be on the lookout at Trader Joes for super thinly sliced steak, it made it so easy. If you can’t find it, I gave some alternatives below!

Philly Cheesesteak Tacos

  • 1 pound shaved beef or steak thinly sliced

  • 3 Tablespoons oil, divided

  • 2 onions, sliced

  • 2 bell peppers, sliced

  • salt and pepper

  • 4 oz cream cheese

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 8 oz shredded provolone cheese

  • 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning, optional

  • tortillas

Heat a large skillet at medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon oil to pan and then meat. Season with salt and pepper and stir until browned, work in batches if your pan is smaller. Remove meat to a plate.

Add the remaining oil to the same pan and add in the onions and peppers, again seasoning with salt and pepper. Lower the heat to medium and stir occasionally until the onions are caramelized.

In a small pan, heat up the cream cheese with the milk on medium heat, stirring until the cream cheese is melted. Add in the provolone and season with some salt, pepper, and the optional Cajun seasoning. Stir until all melted and lower heat to low.

Grab your tortillas and warm them in the oven, microwave or on the stove. Spoon a little cheese sauce on the bottom, top with steak, onion and pepper mixture, and finally a little more cheese sauce. Serve warm!

These are the cooked parts you need to make these epic tacos. I like to put my tortillas on my gas stove and get them a little charred, it adds great flavor!

I magically found thinly sliced steak at Trader Joes but if you can’t find it at your store, you can partially freeze a steak (a lean one) and slice it as thinly as you can. Another option is buy some roast beef from your deli.

There is nothing better than caramelized onions and peppers? Take it slow and you will be rewarded in flavor.

This cheese “wiz” sauce cannot be beat, super simple and you know exactly what is in it. Three ingredients and some seasonings and you will have a new favorite.

That cheese sauce is going to be the glue so spoon it on

Place a generous helping of meat on each taco

Top with the peppers and onions and a final drizzle of sauce. Now they are ready to chow down on!
